Pool House Pavilion

Mendham

A NEW FREE-STANDING POOL PAVILION, terrace, pergola, fire pit, and lounge in Mendham, New Jersey.

This project entailed removing an existing pool terrace, retaining walls and pergola to introduce a new terrace, dining pergola and pool pavilion. Taking cues from the main residence, the new pool pavilion is clad in locally sourced fieldstone, with solid limestone quoining, painted CNC cut mahogany trim, slate roof with lead-coated standing seam copper eaves. Gutters and leaders are built-in to enhance the clean lines of the structure. The interiors are finished in painted mahogany shiplap siding and floor-to-ceiling hand-formed ceramic tile. Kitchen millwork consists of cerused white oak, satin brass hardware, and Danby imperial marble countertops quarried in Vermont.

The new pool terrace is paved in brick, set in a herringbone pattern, which is in turn banded in Croatian limestone, accenting the rigorous symmetry of the site. The structure is based on a shingle-style 'pagoda' with swept rooflines and a large central arch that focuses the view from the pool to the landscape beyond. This open space provides shade and cooling breezes on the hottest days. Custom-designed railings, balusters, corbels, and gable accents complete the design.

Furnishings were selected to bridge a traditional structure with contemporary function and living. Powder-coated aluminum furnishings, with bold color accents, provide a restrained elegance to the whole.

This project was the recipient of a 2022 American Institute of Architects Silver Medal for New Residential Construction.
